Rio de Janeiro begins R$ 8.3 million restoration of Cordão do Bola Preta Cultural Center

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has launched the reconstruction and restoration of the Cordão do Bola Preta Cultural Center in the city's downtown area. The project, managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Infrastructure, involves an investment of R$ 8.3 million.

The renovation focuses on properties located at Rua do Lavradio, 90, and Rua da Relação, 1. The work includes restoring facades and window frames to preserve original architectural features, as the site is within the Cruz Vermelha Cultural Environment Protection Area. The modernized 1,300-square-meter complex is designed to accommodate approximately 1,200 people and will feature a bistro, kitchen, reception area, performance space, and administrative offices.

Recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of Rio since 2007, the Cordão do Bola Preta is a central symbol of the city's street Carnival. The revitalized space aims to support year-round cultural activities related to samba and Carnival, while stimulating local tourism, gastronomy, and services in the Lapa and Historic Center regions. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2027.
