Rio de Janeiro clothing store shuttered over counterfeit goods

Authorities in Campo Grande, located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, have closed a clothing store following an inspection by the State Consumer Defense Secretariat (Sedcon) and Procon-RJ. During the operation, officials seized 742 counterfeit items, including shorts, shirts, and jackets that imitated both national and international brands.

The enforcement action was triggered by a complaint from a law firm representing several of the affected brands. Inspectors found that the establishment lacked a business license, a Fire Department Approval Certificate, and proper identification documents. Additionally, the store failed to provide invoices or proof of origin for the merchandise, making it impossible to trace suppliers.

The store owner has 15 days to present a defense. This incident highlights broader economic issues in Brazil; according to the National Forum Against Piracy and Illegality, the illegal market caused estimated losses of R$ 473.2 billion in 2025, representing approximately 3.75% of the country's GDP. The clothing sector is the most heavily impacted, with estimated losses of R$ 87.3 billion.
