Rio de Janeiro court orders defense to explain appeal in Henry Borel murder case
A judge from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice has ordered the defense of former city councilman Jairo Souza Santos Junior, known as Dr. Jairinho, to present the grounds for their appeal. This follows his conviction to over 43 years in prison for the 2021 death of 4-year-old Henry Borel.
Dr. Jairinho was convicted of qualified homicide involving cruel means and actions that prevented the victim from defending himself, as well as coercion during the legal process. The court also addressed the role of Monique Medeiros, the child's mother, who was convicted of omission. While her prison sentence was considered served due to previous preventive detention, the Public Prosecutor's Office has appealed her acquittal regarding the charge of intentional homicide, arguing she failed to act on warning signs regarding the risks posed to her son.
Following the defense's submission, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the prosecution assistants will have the opportunity to respond to the appeal.
