Copacabana cyclist beaten to death after mistaken for bicycle thief

Cláudio Rafael Landeiro Moreira, 37, died in Copacabana after being brutally beaten by a group of individuals who mistook him for a bicycle thief. The victim was riding a bicycle belonging to his sister when the incident occurred.

Security footage analysis revealed that the victim was struck 63 times over a nine-minute period. He died from traumatic brain injury and internal hemorrhaging. The assault involved street security guards and delivery workers.

Rio de Janeiro courts have maintained the temporary detention of four suspects: security guards Davi Santos Machado and Jorge Luiz Ricardo Dias, and delivery workers Felipe Eduardo dos Santos Silva and Ailton José da Silva. Davi Santos Machado reportedly changed his testimony, initially denying involvement before admitting to participating in the attack.

Police are currently working to identify a fifth suspect seen in the footage and are investigating other individuals who may have been involved or failed to provide assistance.
