Rio de Janeiro eases IPTU tax exemption rules for heritage properties
The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has issued a decree to ease the rules for granting and renewing IPTU (Property and Territorial Urban Tax) exemptions. The measure targets properties of historical, cultural, ecological, or environmental significance.
Under the new regulations, owners can initiate the benefit request by presenting only a Property Aptitude Report, replacing the previously required Certificate of Property Adequacy during the initial phase. This change aims to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and encourage the maintenance of the city's architectural and environmental heritage. Taxpayers opting for this procedure may request a suspension of IPTU payments for up to three consecutive years. The decree, signed by Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, is effective immediately.
