Rio de Janeiro establishes Disque Autismo to protect rights

The state of Rio de Janeiro has officially established ‘Disque Autismo’, a new service designed to protect the rights of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Sanctioned by interim Governor Ricardo Couto under Law No. 11.297, the initiative aims to provide a dedicated channel for reporting abuse, neglect, or rights violations.

The service will be free of charge and accessible through multiple platforms, including telephone, websites, and mobile applications. Beyond reporting misconduct, the channel will serve an informative role, guiding families on how to access guaranteed health, education, and social assistance services.

To encourage reporting, the law guarantees anonymity and confidentiality for whistleblowers. While the legislation is in effect, the specific contact number has not yet been released, pending the designation of a managing state secretariat and the hiring of trained personnel. Once operational, informational materials will be distributed in public and private schools, health centers, and on official government websites.
