Rio de Janeiro expands Força Municipal policing to Santa Cruz
The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has announced the expansion of the Força Municipal policing operations to the Santa Cruz neighborhood in the West Zone. Starting September 13, the preventive and ostensive policing will cover strategic areas including the local train station, the popular commercial center, and the Santa Cruz Shopping mall.
This expansion marks the 14th strategic area to receive the specialized group, which has been active since March. The deployment locations are determined through the analysis of criminal hotspots and statistical data regarding robberies and thefts. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere noted that the focus on transit hubs and commercial zones has helped reduce crime rates by nearly 70% in some existing operational areas.
Urban Security Secretary Brenno Carnevale provided an operational report detailing the group's impact since its inception. The force has conducted over 13,000 approaches, resulting in 1,215 arrests and police conductions. Additionally, agents have recovered 300 cell phones and 237 motorcycles, and seized various weapons, including a pistol, 21 firearm replicas, and 70 bladed weapons.
