Rio de Janeiro expands skate programs on World Skate Day

On Sunday, June 21, Rio de Janeiro marked World Skate Day with a municipal launch to boost skateboarding. The city's Sports and Leisure secretariat (SMEL) highlighted three Olympic Villages – Radialista Apolinho Washington Rodrigues in Gamboa, Aldo Miccolis in Encantado, and the Parque Olímpico in Barra – that together host almost 200 enrolled students.

Municipal Sports Secretary Bruno Ramos said the initiative aims to broaden activity options for residents, noting skateboarding’s success as an internationally recognized Brazilian sport. Teachers emphasized the role of free, group lessons in developing motor skills, balance and socialisation for children and adolescents.

Skateboarding entered the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2021, where Brazil earned three medals, and again reached the podium at Paris 2024. The city hopes the expanded access will nurture new talent and encourage broader participation.
