Rio de Janeiro expands tech‑focused schools and vocational training for thousands

Rio mayor Eduardo Cavaliere inaugurated the Ginásio Educacional Tecnológico (GET) João do Rio in Guadalupe on 16 May. The new STEAM‑oriented school serves about 330 students and adds to the city’s network of 308 GETs, with a goal of reaching 350 this year and 500 by 2028. Facilities include a 3‑D printer, virtual‑reality headsets, robotics kits and other tools for hands‑on learning in programming, mathematics and language arts.

On 15 May the city’s Secretaria Especial de Economia Solidária held a graduation ceremony for the Impacta Rio program, awarding certificates to more than 1 200 participants who completed courses in areas such as mobile‑phone repair, barbering, tailoring, manicure and other trades. Officials including secretary Thiago Pereira and councilor Marcio Santos highlighted the initiative’s role in generating income, strengthening solidary economy and expanding professional opportunities across Rio’s neighborhoods.
