Rio de Janeiro faces water supply cuts and landslide after heavy rain

A scheduled maintenance of the Ribeirão das Lajes water system by Cedae will temporarily halt operation from 02:00 on Thursday 18 June to 02:00 on Friday 19 June, reducing water supply to dozens of neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro as well as the municipalities of Japeri and Queimados. Residents are advised to conserve water; full restoration is expected within 72 hours, though higher‑lying areas may take longer.

On 15 June, intense rain triggered the rupture of a water pipe, causing a landslide on the Gávea road in the Rocinha favela. No injuries were reported, but several cars and motorcycles were damaged and a nearby Universal Church of the Kingdom of God unit was partially affected. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere ordered night‑time cleanup, announced a slope‑containment project and the construction of an ecopoint, and pledged compensation for the affected land.
