Rio de Janeiro favela residents prioritize education in upcoming elections

As elections approach in Rio de Janeiro, residents of the state's 1,724 favelas are identifying education as their top priority. According to 2022 IBGE census data, approximately 2.1 million people live in these communities across the state, with 1.3 million residing in the city of Rio de Janeiro alone.

Residents report that these areas face significant challenges regarding urbanization and access to basic services, including sanitation, water, and waste collection. Beyond education, community members are calling for improvements in urban mobility, healthcare, culture, leisure, and social participation.

Local activists and residents emphasize the need for candidates who engage in genuine dialogue rather than offering pre-packaged solutions. Specific concerns include the need for technical and professional training, better support for children with disabilities, and addressing the impact of long commutes on work-life balance.
