Rio de Janeiro favela residents vote amid security concerns

Residents of Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro’s largest favela, participated in the first round of presidential elections amid deep concerns regarding public security and the cost of living. Voters in the community of approximately 100,000 people expressed skepticism that the political process will effectively address the long-standing violence caused by clashes between armed criminal groups and police.

The election features a contest between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Flávio Bolsonaro has campaigned on a platform to restore state control by designating groups such as Comando Vermelho and Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) as terrorist organizations, citing models used by the United States and El Salvador. Conversely, Lula has pledged to reclaim territory and disrupt the logistics of these armed groups.
