Rio de Janeiro federal hospitals undergo major renovations and upgrades

Two major federal hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Hospital Federal do Andaraí (HFA) and Hospital Federal de Bonsucesso (HFB), are undergoing advanced renovations and equipment upgrades. The improvements aim to expand outpatient clinics, emergency areas, surgical centers, intensive care units (ICUs), and specialized services such as oncology and trauma care.

As part of the Ministry of Health’s 2024 Hospital Restructuring Plan, these upgrades have already contributed to a 44.39% increase in performed surgeries. The HFA is receiving over R$ 406.9 million via Teto MAC plus a R$ 200 million single installment. The HFB is receiving over R$ 263.7 million via Teto MAC and a R$ 300 million single installment.

Infrastructure changes at HFA include a new Trauma Center building, a new burn treatment wing, 21 outpatient rooms, and several new ICU and surgical beds. The project is being carried out in cooperation with several entities, including Fiocruz and the Rio de Janeiro municipal government.
