Rio de Janeiro firefighters rescue 20 people adrift in Barra da Tijuca
A group of 20 people, ranging in age from 20 to 67, was rescued from the sea in the Barra da Tijuca region of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The group was attempting a crossing to the Tijuca Islands using five stand-up paddleboards and swimming.
Sudden changes in wind direction and intensity pushed the group away from their intended route and toward the São Conrado neighborhood, making it impossible for them to return to shore on their own. One participant contacted the Fire Department via the 193 emergency line once the group was a significant distance from the beach.
Firefighters utilized jet skis to locate and rescue all members of the group. Following medical evaluations, it was confirmed that everyone was in good health and no hospital transfers were necessary.
