Brazil marks National Day of Struggle for the Homeless Population
On the National Day of Struggle for the Homeless Population, various Brazilian municipalities and the Unified Health System (SUS) highlighted efforts to support vulnerable citizens. SUS reported over 700,000 consultations by Street Clinic teams in 2025, with an additional 330,583 in the first half of 2026. The date commemorates the 2004 Massacre da Sé.
In Rio de Janeiro, which holds the second-largest homeless population in Brazil with 35,406 registered individuals, local legislation aims to expand housing and social services. Meanwhile, Rio de Janeiro city launched the 'Cuidar para Viver' program, offering 24-hour support and professional training for drug users and their families.
Other regional actions include João Pessoa's 'Caravana do Cuidar,' providing health, legal, and social assistance, and Manaus's community walks to promote human rights. In Parauapebas and Salvador, specialized street clinics continue to provide medical care and social integration to mitigate the effects of extreme poverty and social isolation.
