Rio de Janeiro hit by heavy rain, flooding and landslides

On Monday 15 May, the city of Rio de Janeiro experienced intense rainfall, recording 64.6 mm of rain in four hours in the Rocinha community of the Tijuca Massif. The storm caused a rupture in an Águas do Rio water pipe and a landslide, but no injuries were reported. Municipal teams from the Secretariat of Conservation and the Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) worked to clear the Gávea Road at Portão Vermelho, which was blocked by water and earth.

The Rio Alert System forecast continued cloudy to overcast conditions with light to moderate rain and moderate winds through Tuesday and into Thursday. The State Center for Monitoring and Disaster Alerts (Cemaden‑RJ) maintained 24‑hour monitoring and issued preventive alerts for residents and neighboring municipalities.
