Rio de Janeiro heavy rain triggers Rocinha favela landslide

Intense rain on Monday caused a landslide in the Rocinha favela of Rio de Janeiro. The Rio municipal rain‑alert system recorded 30.8 mm in one hour at the Rocinha station and a total of 60.8 mm in four hours, the highest amount in the city. The slip occurred on Rua 1 in front of the Universal Church in the Jaqueira area, blocking the Estrada da Gávea at the Portão Vermelho intersection.

No injuries were reported. Municipal agencies—including CET‑Rio, the Subprefecture, GeoRio, the municipal guard and civil defence—were dispatched to secure the site, clear debris, assess geotechnical risk and restore traffic flow. Other neighborhoods such as Laranjeiras, Santa Teresa, Jardim Botânico and Urca also experienced heavy rain, though the Rocinha incident received the most attention. The water utility Águas do Rio denied any pipe rupture, stating that the cause of the collapse is still under investigation. Forecasts indicated continued rain through Thursday, prompting ongoing monitoring by city authorities.
