Brazil naval industry surpasses 2014 employment record

Brazil’s naval industry has reached a significant recovery milestone, with employment in shipbuilding and repair hitting 86,000 in July. This figure surpasses the previous record of 82,400 set in 2014, marking a definitive end to the sector’s recent crisis, according to Sinaval president Ariovaldo Rocha.

During the 20th Navalshore maritime industry fair in Rio de Janeiro, data from Firjan’s Naval Panorama highlighted Rio de Janeiro as the nation’s primary naval hub. The state hosts 82% of the country’s operating offshore platforms and 24 of Brazil’s 49 shipyards, accounting for 66,000 of the 181,000 total jobs in the sector.

Growth is being driven by several key factors, including Petrobras’s ‘Mar Aberto’ program, which anticipates the construction of 96 vessels by 2032 with investments totaling R$ 32 billion. Emerging sectors such as offshore wind energy, the decommissioning of oil and gas assets, and vessel recycling under the Hong Kong Convention are also providing new avenues for expansion.

While the North region has seen rapid growth due to technological initiatives, the Southeast remains the dominant industrial center. Challenges remain, including global competition and the need for tax reforms to support activities like platform decommissioning.
