Rio de Janeiro hosts World Triathlon Cup as sports tourism targets $2.2 bn revenue

Rio de Janeiro will stage a World Triathlon Cup stage on 2 August 2026 on Copacabana Beach, bringing together about 130 athletes from roughly 30 nations. The sprint‑distance race offers valuable points toward qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and a US$60,000 prize purse. The event marks the return of elite triathlon competition to the city a decade after the Rio 2016 Olympics, highlighting the legacy of the Games.

At the same time, Rio’s sports‑tourism sector is expanding rapidly. Officials announced that 236 sporting events are confirmed for 2026, expected to attract 1.19 million participants and generate R$2.24 billion (about $425 million) for the local economy, a 23.6% increase over 2025. The growth strategy was presented at the CONFUT USA 2026 summit in New York and looks ahead to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, for which Rio will be a host city. The city’s robust infrastructure, built for previous major events, underpins its position as a leading South‑American sports‑tourism destination.
