Rio de Janeiro inaugurates bilingual Mandarin‑STEAM school in Tijuca

On May 13, 2026, Rio de Janeiro’s mayor Eduardo Cavaliere and education secretary Hugo Nepomuceno opened the new Ginásio Educacional Tecnológico (GET) CIEP Samuel Wainer in the Tijuca district of the city's North Zone. The bilingual school teaches in Portuguese and Mandarin and serves about 270 elementary‑level students.

The GET is part of a citywide network that now includes 307 units, reaching 125,000 students across Rio. The municipal government aims to expand the program to 350 schools and 150,000 students this year, with a target of 500 GETs by 2028. The curriculum follows a STEAM approach, offering robotics, artificial‑intelligence projects, 3D printing, laser cutting and other hands‑on technologies. The Ministry of Education recognized the model as an “Inspirational Experience” in school management and pedagogy.

The new facility integrates modern labs and maker‑space equipment to promote interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking and creativity, positioning Rio as a hub for innovative public education.
