Rio de Janeiro inaugurates new South Zone leisure bike lane

Rio de Janeiro has inaugurated a new 7.2-kilometer leisure bike lane along the South Zone waterfront. The lane runs through Leblon, Ipanema, and Copacabana, occupying a vehicle lane adjacent to the central median.

The bike lane is scheduled to operate on Sundays and holidays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. To ensure safety and organization, the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (SEOP), in collaboration with the Municipal Guard and the Secretariat of Social Assistance, has established inspection posts.

Authorities are using dynamometers to test the maximum speed of electric bicycles and other self-propelled vehicles. These enforcement actions are intended to be educational and preventive through October 31, focusing on informing citizens about vehicle categories, safety requirements, and speed limits.
