Rio de Janeiro installs LED lighting at Aterro do Cocotá park

RioLuz completed a modernization of the public lighting at the Parque Poeta Manuel Bandeira, popularly known as Aterro do Cocotá, on Ilha do Governador in Rio de Janeiro. The work installed roughly 460 LED luminaires and about 190 projectors aimed at the sports courts and skate track, and more than two kilometres of underground cabling were laid throughout the park.

The new LED system improves light distribution, increases safety for night‑time users and is expected to encourage greater use of the park’s facilities, including its multipurpose sports areas and the Areninha Carioca Renato Russo cultural space. The project is part of the city’s "Luz Maravilha" programme to replace traditional lighting with energy‑efficient LED technology. Rodolpho Maldonado, president of RioLuz, said the upgrade represents another investment by the municipality to value public spaces and provide a safer, more comfortable environment for residents.
