Rio de Janeiro judge suspends Alerj process for TCE-RJ counselor selection
A judge from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice has suspended an accelerated procedure initiated by the Legislative Assembly of Rio (Alerj) to select a new counselor for the State Court of Accounts (TCE-RJ). The decision, issued by Judge Fernando Marques de Campos Cabral Filho, halts the application of Resolution 1.694/2026, which sought to reduce the registration period from 30 days to just three business days and eliminate certain appeal stages.
The injunction follows a popular action citing the risk of irreversible damage, noting that the lifetime nature of the counselor position would make it difficult to annul a potentially illegal appointment. The vacancy arose following the removal of Domingos Brazão from office.
In a separate political development regarding Rio de Janeiro's administration, discussions continue regarding the state's leadership following the resignation of Cláudio Castro. Current interim management under Desembargador Ricardo Couto has implemented administrative changes, including the dismissal of over 6,000 commissioned positions to achieve an estimated savings of R$ 221 million.
