Rio de Janeiro Justice System Holds Homeless Services Fair, Converts Six Arrests to Preventive Detention

From August 5‑7, the Tribunal de Justiça do Rio (TJRJ) and the Tribunal Regional Federal da 2ª Região (TRF2) organized the fifth PopRuaJud‑Rio mutirão in the cathedral’s external area. The event offered free legal services to people experiencing homelessness, including birth and marriage certificates, paternity DNA tests, social‑benefit registrations, medical‑legal examinations and job‑search assistance.

During the same period, a Rio court changed the status of six men arrested in recent police operations to preventive detention. The men face charges ranging from drug trafficking and armed robbery in the city’s North Zone to a qualified theft and arson at a commercial premises in Niterói. Authorities cited public‑order concerns and the risk of repeat offenses as reasons for the preventive measures.
