Rio de Janeiro launches major redevelopment of former Terra Encantada site and Cine Vaz Lobo

The Rio de Janeiro municipal government approved a R$35 million urbanisation plan for the 160,000 m² former Terra Encantada amusement‑park site in the Barra da Tijuca district. The project, led by developer RJZ Cyrela in partnership with Queiroz Galvão, will create new streets linking Avenida Ayrton Senna to Avenida José Silva de Azevedo Neto, a large public square, underground utilities, a 1.4 km bike lane network, and mixed‑use buildings including a residential condominium and a Hapvida health unit.

In a separate initiative, the city expropriated the historic Cine Vaz Lobo in the North Zone to transform it into a R$19 million cultural centre. The plan restores the Art Déco façade and adds a main cinema‑theatre hall, multi‑purpose rooms, a library, a digital museum, studios, and an outdoor arena, providing new cultural and educational facilities for the surrounding neighbourhoods.
