Rio de Janeiro man sentenced to 39 years for killing police officer

Walace Andrade de Oliveira has been sentenced to 39 years and four months in prison for his involvement in the death of civil police officer João Pedro Marquini Santana and an attempted robbery against Judge Tula Corrêa de Mello. The incident occurred on March 30, 2025, in Vargem Grande, Rio de Janeiro, where a group of criminals set up a fake police checkpoint to intercept the victims.

During the attack, the officer was killed by rifle fire. The judge’s vehicle was also struck by multiple shots, but she escaped due to the vehicle’s armor. The court found that the defendant stole the officer’s firearm and badge. While other individuals were implicated in the crime, two are deceased and one remains a fugitive.
