Rio de Janeiro Military Police captain dismissed after extortion case

The Rio de Janeiro State Official Gazette published the ex officio dismissal of Military Police Captain Fábio da Silva Ferreira on Tuesday. The decision follows a legal process spanning nearly two decades regarding an extortion incident in Volta Redonda.

In 2007, a Federal Police wiretap recorded the officer negotiating a R$ 5,000 payment to release a criminal's partner who had been detained with 18 kg of marijuana. Following a 2012 formal complaint, the officer was sentenced to eight years in prison, a conviction upheld on appeal in 2016. After serving approximately three years, he was granted parole in late 2018 but subsequently returned to administrative duties within the Military Police, including participating in officer training in 2019.

The final dismissal, signed by acting Governor Ricardo Couto, concludes the administrative and judicial proceedings aimed at removing the agent from the state's ranks.
