Rio de Janeiro gubernatorial race: Paes leads in polls amid payroll investigation

As the Rio de Janeiro gubernatorial elections approach, recent polling shows Eduardo Paes leading the race. According to Datafolha, Paes holds 42% of the vote, followed by Douglas Ruas with 31%. In a potential second-round scenario, Datafolha estimates Paes would secure 52% against Ruas's 38%. Real Time Big Data results align with this trend, showing Paes in the lead in both first-round and second-round simulations, including scenarios involving Anthony Garotinho.

The final televised debate between the leading candidates was marked by intense confrontations. Douglas Ruas criticized Paes over unfulfilled transportation promises, specifically regarding Metro Line 3, and questioned his political alliances. Paes countered by questioning Ruas's record as a state secretary and his ties to the current state administration. Other candidates, including Anthony Garotinho, William Siri, and André Marinho, also participated, discussing security, education, and corruption.

Separately, the Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry has launched a civil inquiry into the state government's administration. The investigation focuses on a 46% increase in the number of commissioned positions between January 2023 and March 2026. Furthermore, monthly payroll expenses for these positions rose by approximately 87%, increasing from R$ 53.7 million to R$ 100.36 million during the same period.
