Rio de Janeiro issues Stage 2 wind alert as gusts up to 76 km/h threaten city
The municipality of Rio de Janeiro entered a Stage 2 wind alert on the night of 4 August 2026 after forecasts predicted moderate to strong winds with gusts up to 76 km/h, and isolated reports of speeds exceeding 100 km/h. The Defesa Civil sent a severe alert by SMS, urging residents to avoid trees, metal structures and other hazards. The warning covers the western and coastal zones of the city.
The recent gusts have already caused significant disruption: two deaths were reported, hundreds of trees fell, and more than 800 000 electricity customers experienced outages. Energy distributors are responding; the Brazilian Association of Electricity Distributors (ABRADEE) said annual investment will rise from R$ 18 billion in 2021 to R$ 41 billion in 2025, with over 40 % earmarked for grid modernization and digitalisation. Enel Rio has activated its emergency plan, preparing for possible gusts of up to 90 km/h on Friday.
The strong winds have also produced unusual incidents, such as a foam mattress lifted onto a tree in Ipanema and rescued by the Corpo de Bombeiros. Nearby municipalities, including Maricá, issued similar alerts for moderate gusts through Friday. The classic football match between Fluminense and Vasco da Gama on 5 August will be played under these windy conditions.
