Rio de Janeiro police occupy Complexo de Israel communities
The Rio de Janeiro Military Police have launched an indefinite occupation of five communities within the Complexo de Israel in the city's North Zone. The operation involves over 220 officers from specialized units, including BOPE, the Shock Battalion, and the Canine Action Battalion. The primary objective is to re-establish security and prevent the Comando Vermelho (CV) faction from expanding into territories currently controlled by the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP).
The targeted communities include Cinco Bocas, Cidade Alta, Pica-Pau, Vigário Geral, and Parada de Lucas. Authorities identified the area as a stronghold for Álvaro Malaquias Santos Rosa, known as Peixão, a major leader of the TCP. During the operations, police discovered a high-standard, three-story luxury residence attributed to Peixão, featuring marble flooring, a gym, and a jacuzzi.
Recent tensions have led to violent confrontations. Criminals reportedly set fire to four trucks on Avenida Brasil in a suspected retaliation against police movements. The police are also addressing issues of religious intolerance and the use of religious symbols by criminal groups to justify territorial control. While the occupation aims to stabilize the region, some reports suggest that a lack of personnel may limit the long-term duration of the presence.
