Rio de Janeiro police operations trigger violence and transit disruptions

Intense police operations in Rio de Janeiro have caused significant disruptions to public services and transportation. In the Serrinha community of Madureira, a Military Police operation involving the Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (Bope) resulted in one suspect dead and another arrested. The confrontation led to the use of vehicles and tires as barricades by criminals, causing temporary closures of major roads like Avenida Edgard Romero and impacting several BRT lines and municipal bus routes.

Following the occupation of Serrinha, which authorities stated will continue for an indefinite period, criminal retaliation occurred in the Irajá, Colégio, and Cavalcanti regions. In these areas, thirteen buses were reportedly hijacked and used as barricades to block streets. This secondary wave of violence affected at least 17 bus lines and caused intermittent traffic stoppages.

The violence also impacted essential services, with four municipal schools facing disruptions and a local health unit suspending external activities, such as home visits, for safety reasons.
