Copacabana cyclist death: Four suspects arrested in Rio de Janeiro

Four men have been arrested in connection with the fatal beating of 37-year-old cyclist Cláudio Rafael Landeiro Moreira in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred on the night of August 11 after street security personnel mistakenly accused the victim of stealing a bicycle. The bicycle actually belonged to Moreira's sister.

Authorities identified the suspects as street security guards Davi Santos Machado and Jorge Luiz Ricardo Dias, along with delivery workers Felipe Eduardo dos Santos Silva and Ailton José da Silva. While Machado and Dias have been detained, Silva surrendered to police, and da Silva remains at large. Investigations are also targeting another unidentified delivery worker seen in security footage.

Security camera footage captured the brutal assault, which lasted approximately nine minutes. The victim was subjected to at least 57 blows with a club, as well as kicks and punches. Moreira, who suffered from psychological disorders, was unable to effectively explain the ownership of the bicycle during the confrontation. He died in the early hours of August 12 at Hospital Miguel Couto due to traumatic brain injury, internal hemorrhage, and injuries to his spleen and kidney.
