Rio de Janeiro political landscape shifts ahead of 2026 elections

As the 2026 elections approach in Rio de Janeiro, political figures and demographic trends are shaping the state's landscape. State Deputy Márcio Gualberto (PL) is seeking reelection to the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj). A career civil police officer and chair of the Public Security and Police Affairs Commission, Gualberto campaigns on a platform of conservative Christian values, family, and a “zero tolerance” approach to crime.

Gualberto, who is associated with the Centro Dom Bosco, previously authored legislation that made Corpus Christi a state holiday in Rio de Janeiro. Although the law was challenged, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) unanimously upheld it in June 2026, citing its cultural and historical relevance.

Simultaneously, the political importance of the female electorate is rising. Women represent approximately 54% of the voting population in Rio de Janeiro. This demographic majority is expected to drive the political agenda, focusing on issues such as gender-based violence, maternal health, childcare, and public transportation security, despite ongoing debates regarding the underrepresentation of women in decision-making roles.
