Rio de Janeiro proposal seeks symbolic transfer of federal government seat
Federal Deputy Laura Carneiro (PSD-RJ) has filed an urgency request in the Chamber of Deputies for a bill that proposes the symbolic transfer of the federal government headquarters from Brasília to Rio de Janeiro.
If approved, the law would mandate that on January 20 of each year, the institutional and governmental activities of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches be symbolically transferred to Rio de Janeiro. The chosen date coincides with the celebrations of the city's patron saint, Saint Sebastian, and honors Rio de Janeiro’s history as the former capital of Brazil.
The proposal, which also carries the signature of PSD leader Antonio Brito (PSD-BA), stipulates that the Federal Executive Power will coordinate with state and municipal authorities to manage the necessary logistics, security, and infrastructure for the official acts.
