Rio de Janeiro prosecutors charge eight more officers in Operação Contenção
The Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office (MPRJ) has filed three new complaints against eight military police officers involved in Operação Contenção. The operation, conducted on October 28, 2025, in the Penha and Alemão complexes, is recognized as the deadliest police operation in Brazilian history, resulting in 122 deaths, including five security agents.
The accused officers face charges of home invasion, theft, and refusal of military obedience. This development is part of an independent investigation led by the Specialized Action Group (Gaesp), which has now presented a total of six complaints against 17 military police officers for various illegalities.
Investigative efforts include the analysis of over 3,600 hours of body camera footage, which revealed attempts to obstruct evidence by intentionally turning off recording equipment. Other reported misconduct includes the theft of vehicle parts, appropriation of weaponry, and the theft of residents' belongings. The MPRJ is also following protocols established by the Supreme Court's ADPF 635, known as the 'ADPF das Favelas,' to ensure oversight of police actions in densely populated areas.
