Rio de Janeiro protesters attacked during pro-Lula demonstration

A political demonstration in support of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was targeted by an attack in Rio de Janeiro’s Largo da Carioca. During the peaceful gathering, which included approximately two thousand people and various social movements, objects were thrown from a nearby building.

Reports indicate that participants were struck by stones, PET bottles, and water balloons. At least ten people, including a child and two members of the Homeless Workers' Movement (MTST), sustained injuries. Organizers described the incident as a serious assault, with MTST national coordinator Gabriel Siqueira characterizing the event as an attempted homicide and a threat to democracy.

The 5th Police Precinct (Mem de Sá) has opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities are working to identify the individuals responsible by reviewing security camera footage from the buildings involved and coordinating with the Military Police.
