Rio de Janeiro crime surge: 34 faction shootings in July

The Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area experienced a significant surge in violence during July 2026. According to the Instituto Fogo Cruzado, the region recorded 34 shootings stemming from conflicts between criminal factions and militias, a figure that doubles the 16 shootings reported in June. In total, 196 shootings occurred throughout the month, with 47% (92 incidents) attributed to police operations.

In response to the ongoing territorial disputes, the Rio de Janeiro Military Police launched large-scale operations involving at least 27 battalions across the city and surrounding municipalities like São Gonçalo and Duque de Caxias. These efforts aim to contain the expansion of the Comando Vermelho gang and seize weapons and drugs.

Recent police actions in the Mangueira region triggered intense local unrest. Following an operation targeting a suspected criminal scrap yard, residents staged protests, setting fire to tires and trash containers to block major thoroughfares such as Avenida Rei Pelé and Rua São Francisco Xavier. The unrest caused severe traffic disruptions, affected 19 bus lines, and prompted the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) to advise students and staff to avoid the Maracanã campus.
