Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry intervenes in infrastructure and transport issues

The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) has secured judicial decisions addressing infrastructure and service issues in the state.

In Nova Iguaçu, a court ordered the reversal of a 2020 intervention in the Andrade de Araújo Canal. The work, performed by the municipality of Belford Roxo without authorization from the State Environmental Institute (Inea), reportedly narrowed the river's passage. This ‘strangulation’ reduced water flow capacity, contributing to increased flooding in the Engenho Pequeno neighborhood.

In Petrópolis, the MPRJ has filed a civil public action seeking to terminate the concession contract with Turp Transporte. The ministry cited persistent service failures, including frequent delays, mechanical breakdowns, overcrowding, and financial instability. The action requests that the municipality of Petrópolis take over the bus lines within 30 days or that a new bidding process be initiated to ensure service continuity.
