Rio de Janeiro ranks second in Brazil for volunteer election poll workers

Rio de Janeiro has emerged as the second state in Brazil with the highest percentage of volunteer election poll workers for the 2026 elections. According to data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), 78% of the 143,688 citizens summoned for the role in Rio de Janeiro opted to serve as volunteers. This figure significantly exceeds the national average of 58%.

Rio de Janeiro shares this second-place ranking with the state of Paraná, trailing only the Federal District, which maintains an 85% volunteer rate.

This high level of engagement is supported by state legislation. Law 9.412/21, established by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), provides incentives for volunteers by exempting them from registration fees for public service examinations (concursos públicos) within the state administration for two years following their service.
