Nova Iguaçu boosts winter clothing drive after record low temperature
On 16 July 2026 the municipality of Nova Iguaçu recorded its lowest temperature of the year, with thermometers in Jaceruba reaching 11.1 °C. In response, the city intensified its annual Campanha do Agasalho, urging residents to donate clean coats, pants, socks and blankets. Donations can be dropped off at the Secretariat of Municipal Social Assistance (SEMAS) and at the local Centers for Social Assistance (CRAS) and Specialized Social Assistance (CREAS).
Social Assistance Secretary Elaine Medeiros said, “We don’t ask for new clothes. As long as they are clean and in good condition, the people who receive them deserve dignity. If each person donates one piece they no longer use, we can warm many families during this cold period.” SEMAS also runs a year‑round specialized outreach for people living on the streets and operates the Centro Pop, which provides hygiene facilities and various social‑assistance services to about 1,200 users each month.
