Rio de Janeiro’s Arcos da Lapa Completed $1.7 M Revitalization

The 276‑year‑old Arcos da Lapa aqueduct in Rio de Janeiro has undergone a full revitalization costing roughly R$ 1.7 million. The municipal Secretary of Conservation oversaw the work, which included careful cleaning, lime‑wash painting (caiação) and restoration of the surrounding Praça Cardeal Câmara, as well as maintenance of the nearby “A Lapa” and “Arcos da Lapa” panels by artist Jorge Selarón.

The project respected the monument’s historic status with IPHAN, using traditional techniques that allow the stone to “breathe.” Officials said the work preserves the iconic structure that once carried water for the colonial capital and now serves as a key tourist attraction and terminus for the Bondinho de Santa Teresa.

Secretary Diego Vaz highlighted the effort as a commitment to Rio’s cultural identity and its creative‑nightlife economy, continuing a series of restorations carried out in 2011, 2014, 2016, 2022 and now 2026.
