Rio de Janeiro sees surge in gun violence, including kidnapping shooting near UPA
Police in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone surrounded a community after a man was abducted and placed in a car trunk in the Costa Barros neighborhood. When the suspects released him near the local Unidade de Pronto Atendimento (UPA), they opened fire as he ran for help. The victim was wounded, taken first to the UPA and then transferred to Hospital Municipal Salgado Filho.
In the same period, four additional residents of the North Zone were killed by stray bullets in favela confrontations. The victims included 28‑year‑old Karolaine Nascimento Neves, an autistic woman who was found dead in a favela valley; 16‑year‑old Maiky Brian dos Santos Silva, a teenage fighter; 75‑year‑old Leda Maria da Conceição Antônio, a bakery owner shot inside her shop; and an app delivery driver who survived a gunshot wound and was taken to Hospital Getúlio Vargas. The string of killings underscores a rising wave of armed violence affecting ordinary citizens across Rio's favelas.
