Rio de Janeiro strong winds topple trees, close streets

Strong winds swept Rio de Janeiro early on Sunday 12 July 2026, driven by a fast‑moving cold front. Gusts reached 59.3 km/h at Galeão Airport, 53.6 km/h in Jacarepaguá and 46 km/h in Vidigal.

Falling trees and a pole caused road closures across the city. In São Conrado (Zona Sul) a tree collapsed onto power lines on Estrada da Canoa, blocking Rua Coronel Ribeiro Gomes. In the Tijuca neighborhood (Zona Norte) a tree fell on Rua Carvalho Alvim, prompting the closure of Rua Uruguai, and another tree and a pole came down on Rua Andrade Neves near Praça Corumbá. Firefighters, CET‑Rio and Light crews responded and cleared the affected streets by around 07:00 h.

The weather service warned of weak to moderate rain for the day, with temperatures between 15 °C and 30 °C, and forecast unsettled conditions for Monday before improving mid‑week.
