Rio de Janeiro teacher dies after hospital misdiagnoses cardiac emergency

An autopsy report has confirmed that 26-year-old history teacher and UFRJ student Giulia Silva de Araújo died from cardiac tamponade caused by a rupture of an ascending aortic aneurysm. The findings support allegations from her family that the Hospital Municipal Francisco da Silva Telles in Rio de Janeiro failed to correctly diagnose her condition.

According to medical records, de Araújo sought emergency care twice on August 28 after experiencing chest pain and fatigue. During the first visit, she was diagnosed with acute pain and discharged within 50 minutes. She returned approximately three hours later with worsening shortness of breath, but was discharged a second time after medical staff noted that an electrocardiogram and X-ray showed no abnormalities.

Family members and legal representatives contend that the hospital misidentified a life-threatening cardiac emergency as anxiety. The autopsy confirms she died hours after her second discharge due to the aortic rupture.
