Brazil expands electromobility with 1 million vehicles and Rio's electric bus plan
Brazil is seeing significant developments in electromobility. The national electrified vehicle fleet has reached a milestone of 1 million units, according to the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE). This includes battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and conventional hybrid models.
In Rio de Janeiro, the municipal government has announced a R$ 509 million project to implement the city's first large-scale electric bus fleet. Supported by R$ 329 million in financing from BNDES via the Climate Fund, the initiative involves a 16-year public-private partnership. The project aims to introduce 175 electric buses to the Sistema RIO starting in the second half of 2027, supported by a new charging and maintenance garage in Maré. This transition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 13,300 tons annually.
Additionally, São José dos Campos has expanded its sustainable mobility infrastructure by integrating electric charging points into its 'Zona Azul' electronic parking system. Five strategic locations now offer 24-hour charging for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, accessible via mobile application or QR code.
