Rio de Janeiro unveils new credit lines as July sees record business openings

The State of Rio de Janeiro's development agency, AgeRio, in partnership with the national development bank BNDES, has launched two credit programs for local firms. The BNDES Micro and Small Enterprise line offers loans up to R$ 250,000 for businesses with annual revenue up to R$ 4.8 million, with repayment terms of up to 36 months and a rate based on the BNDES Fixed Rate plus 5.75% per year. The BNDES Medium‑Enterprise line provides financing up to R$ 3 million for companies exceeding R$ 4.8 million in revenue, with terms of up to 60 months and a rate of the BNDES Fixed Rate plus 3.41% per year. Applications are processed through AgeRio’s website.

In July, the Rio de Janeiro Commercial Registry (Jucerja) recorded 8,169 new company registrations, the highest monthly total in its 217‑year history. The state now totals 58,765 new firms for the January‑July period, a 16.3% increase over the same span in 2025. Leading sectors include office services, medical offices, retail clothing, non‑financial holdings, and business‑consulting. The capital city accounted for 28,422 registrations, followed by Niterói, Duque de Caxias, São Gonçalo and Nova Iguaçu.
