Rio de Janeiro windstorm causes deaths, outages and infrastructure damage FAST-MOVING

Mayor Eduardo Cavalieri acknowledged that weather alerts had been insufficient. Energy experts warned that the grid’s vulnerability to strong winds demands large‑scale investment, such as underground cabling and systematic tree‑pruning, to improve resilience. Meteorologists attributed the event to a low‑pressure zone and a cold front, stating that a direct link to the El Niño phenomenon could not be established.
