Rio de Janeiro's Academia Carioca marks 17 years, serving 203,000 participants
The Academia Carioca program, launched by the Rio de Janeiro municipal government in 2009 as a key component of Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS), celebrated its 17th anniversary on 24 June 2026. The initiative offers free supervised physical‑activity classes in 222 primary‑care units across the city, engaging 203,000 regular participants, 57% of whom are over 60 years old.
A team of 126 physical‑education professionals works alongside health staff to provide walking, dance, capoeira, gymnastics and educational sessions. According to program data, 90% of attendees have achieved better blood‑pressure control, 61% reduced body weight and 52% lowered their body‑mass index, indicating a strong impact on chronic‑disease prevention.
Personal testimonies illustrate the benefits: 48‑year‑old lawyer Carlos Carvalho lost 40 kg and normalized his cholesterol after joining the program, while 71‑year‑old retired nurse Maria de Lourdes Marques credits the classes with improving her health, confidence and social connections. The program has reached more than 1.2 million Rio residents since its inception, reinforcing community ties and promoting healthier lifestyles among the city’s population.
