Rio de Janeiro online betting spending reaches R$2.2 bn annually
A survey by the Instituto Fecomércio de Pesquisas e Análises of 1,024 residents in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, conducted June 22‑25, found that 22.7% have taken part in online betting. The average bettor spends about R$1,200 per year, resulting in a total annual outlay of roughly R$2.2 billion – more than three times the estimated financial flow for Christmas shopping.
Sports betting is the most popular format, cited by 60.9% of respondents, followed by the so‑called “tigrinho” and other virtual casino games (49.4%). The typical bettor is male (65.6%), aged 25‑34 (36.1%), with a high‑school education (66.9%) and earns between one and two minimum wages (36%). About 70% say they use their own salary for bets. Nearly half (48.5%) do not check whether the betting site is legally authorized, while 48.7% are motivated by the prospect of financial return.
Since July 13, the Rio de Janeiro municipal government has banned outdoor advertising for betting platforms and requires these operators to display health‑warning notices from the Ministry of Finance.
