Rio de Janeiro suspends schools amid cyclone bomb forecast of 90 km/h winds
A powerful low‑pressure system, dubbed a “cyclone bomb,” is expected to bring wind gusts of 90 km/h to 110 km/h across Rio de Janeiro and parts of the Southeast on Friday, 7 August. The city entered Stage 2 alert at 19:05 on Thursday, 6 August, prompting the municipal government and the state education authority to suspend all public‑school classes for the day. The University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) also halted all in‑person teaching, maintaining only essential services.
Municipalities along the coast, including Paraty, Angra dos Reis, Niterói, Maricá and other towns in the Rio metropolitan area, announced the suspension of municipal school activities for the same day. Defense Civil and the Center of Operations and Resilience (COR‑Rio) issued warnings urging residents to avoid trees, metal structures and open‑air activities, and to stay indoors during the strongest gusts.
Similar wind warnings affected the coastal city of Bertioga in São Paulo, where the municipal government suspended classes, workshops and sports activities on Friday and Saturday as a precaution. The coordinated response aims to protect students, staff and the broader public from the anticipated high‑velocity winds and associated hazards such as falling trees, power outages and structural damage.
